EARLY YEARS

Curriculum

The IEYC (International Early Years Curriculum) by ICA is an international curriculum designed for children aged 2 to 5 years. This program marks the first step in our international educational proposal.

The goal of the IEYC is to foster a love for learning through personal, social, and emotional development, language and communication, as well as physical and creative development.

The curriculum supports key areas of learning through exploration and inquiry via thematic units and play-based approaches, aimed at developing personal, social, and emotional skills. The learning process begins with the children's natural curiosity, and in a supportive environment, balances the child’s initiative with teacher support. This approach fosters and builds active and cooperative learning among children, with parents playing a crucial role in the process.

This program focuses on the learning and development of children, ensuring that students acquire meaningful learning that prepares them to face the challenges of the 21st century with an international mindset.

Methodology

Through our curriculum, children learn a series of thematic units designed to capture their interest, allowing them to learn concepts and skills through relevant and engaging experiences.

The methodology used is based on Inquiry-Based Learning. Children are able to explore and learn from their environment and gradually express their ideas in multiple ways, becoming architects of their own learning. This process helps them develop their interests, thinking skills, and curiosities over time.

This program is designed around an inquiry cycle where the child is the central motivator, progressing through specific stages. At each stage, the child engages in different moments aimed at capturing their interests and questions, which then complement the inquiry cycle. All this is developed through a practical and active approach that encourages the development of the English language and the soft skills known as “Personal Goals.”

The academic dimension comprises four learning strands that the IEYC considers essential for student development. Each of these four learning strands outlines what children will experience and learn through contextualized activities integrated into the IEYC's thematic learning units. These strands are: Independence and Interdependence: Encouraging children to develop self-confidence and autonomy while understanding the importance of collaboration and relationships. Communication: Fostering the development of language and communication skills in a variety of contexts. Inquiry: Promoting curiosity, exploration, and critical thinking as children learn to ask questions and seek answers. Healthy Living and Physical Well-being: Emphasising the importance of physical health and well-being through active and healthy lifestyles.

Early Years Assessment

Assessment is a vital and integral part of the Early Years Program, enabling educators to effectively understand and support the development and learning of young children. Both formative and summative assessments play an essential role in our program.

Formative Assessment: Throughout each term, formative assessments allow us to provide immediate feedback to the children, enabling them to correct mistakes and improve their learning in real time. This approach helps children learn to self-regulate their learning as they receive continuous guidance on their performance from both their teachers and peers.

Summative Assessment: At the end of each term, summative assessment is conducted through the Two/Three Way Conference. During this conference, students share their portfolios with their parents and teachers, highlighting the skills and strengths they have developed and identifying areas where they need additional support. This activity involves parents in their children's development and progress, fostering effective collaboration between the school and home.
