Miss Minnie Nikolas

Fundadora de St. George's College

When talking about St. George's College we cannot fail to mention Miss Minnie Nikolas, the founder, who showed her fighting spirit from a very young age. She was an educator of exceptional virtues and human qualities; always giving us an example of struggle and improvement.

She always believed in the importance of personal development as a central and integral part of education, she instilled in us the fundamental values of respect, responsibility, honesty, sincerity and the ability to defend what is fair and true.

She began her teaching career in Cairo, at a time when more than 30,000 British people were helping that people and where she fulfilled an educational task that later took her to Chile, where she expressed her true vocation. He later arrived in Peru and began his pedagogical work in 1932, when he founded St. George's School, becoming a first-class school.

When Miss Minnie Nikolas founded the school she wanted to name it after a person who would serve as an example and whom they could turn to in moments of discouragement, a person in whom they would find peace, sweetness, courage, generosity, greatness of soul and humility and it was St George's in whom he found all the virtues that a worthy person can enjoy. Who had a heart open to everyone, above all a great and clean soul; since that is why they called it “mirror of innocence and source of wisdom.”

Initially it emerged as a private primary school whose basis was the teaching of the English language in all its cycles. The idea materialized with the Kindergarten section, made up of six students of different sexes, taking place in a house located on 263 Cantuarias Street in Miraflores. After a month of operation, the student population increased to 15 students. At the end of the school year, the respective closing took place, in a fairly simple ceremony, an event attended by the minister and the British consul, among other personalities; who, after witnessing the different numbers, expressed their congratulations. After 4 years of intense work, 35 students were enrolled.

In 1936, the school moved to 560 Shell Street in the same town, where the student body was increasing significantly and it was decided to teach in English and Spanish. In 1939, after fulfilling all the necessary requirements and with 60 students, the official status was achieved, granted by the Ministry of Public Education, with Miss Minnie Nikolas being the Director.

In 1945, it was expanded into media and commerce sections, thus acquiring the category of common and commercial education school. As a result, the premises had to be expanded, renting the chalet next to the previous one. In 1954, the student body reached 489, making it urgent to build its own spacious premises, in addition to having all the requirements that the new pedagogy demanded.

On July 26, 1954, the land was purchased, with an area of 5,114m2 located in Miraflores. This construction lasted throughout 1955, opening on April 1, 1956 with the dreamed ideal of its own premises, moving to the comfortable, spacious and modern building that occupies the corners of Ricardo Palma and Ernesto Montagne avenues in the La Aurora urbanization. In 2011, the higher grades moved to the new headquarters in Chorrillos.

Currently our school seeks to promote bilingualism, internationalism and cultural diversity, there is great emphasis on individual training and the development of values, as well as the emotional well-being and self-esteem of the students. Our goal is to provide a modern comprehensive education that prepares students to communicate, collaborate and compete effectively in today's globalized society.
